The short answer
The FAA issues pilot certificates at different privilege levels, then adds ratings that identify the aircraft or operating qualification attached to a certificate. Student, sport, recreational, private, commercial, and airline transport pilot are certificates. Airplane, rotorcraft, single-engine land, multiengine land, instrument, and aircraft type qualifications are ratings. Instructor endorsements record particular training or authorisations. A certificate level does not by itself qualify someone for every aircraft, operation, or flying job.
Certificate, rating, and endorsement mean different things
People often say “pilot licence,” but the FAA document is a pilot certificate. The certificate establishes a level of pilot privilege. A rating narrows or extends what sits on that certificate: the aircraft category, class, instrument qualification, or type for which the pilot has met the applicable requirements.
An endorsement is different again. It is an instructor’s signed record that specified training or a required review has been completed. It may authorise a student’s solo activity or document training needed before exercising a particular privilege. It does not silently add a new certificate level or substitute for a rating that the regulations require.
Read the qualification from the outside in:
- What certificate does the pilot hold?
- Which category and class ratings appear on it?
- Is an instrument or aircraft type rating required for the planned operation?
- Are current endorsements, experience, medical documentation, reviews, and operating-rule requirements also satisfied?
That sequence prevents a common mistake: treating one card as permission for every kind of flight.
What pilot certificates does the FAA issue?
Current 14 CFR 61.5 lists six pilot certificates under Part 61: student, sport, recreational, private, commercial, and airline transport pilot. It separately lists flight instructor and ground instructor certificates. Remote pilot certification for small uncrewed aircraft is a distinct Part 107 path, not another step in the usual crewed-aircraft sequence.
Student pilot certificate
A student pilot certificate supports the training stage before a higher certificate. The FAA says a student does not need the certificate merely to begin lessons, but does need it before flying solo. Solo flight also requires the applicable instructor endorsements; the student certificate alone is not solo authority.
The FAA’s current student-certificate page states a minimum age of 16, or 14 for a glider or balloon, and requires the applicant to be able to read, speak, and understand English. Those figures apply to the student certificate, not automatically to the certificate sought later.
Sport and recreational pilot certificates
Sport and recreational certificates are not junior versions of private privileges. Each is its own route with defined operating limits. The FAA’s certificate comparison describes recreational privileges as limited by matters including aircraft category and class, passengers, distance from the departure point, and controlled-airport operations.
Sport pilot privileges have their own eligible-aircraft and operating rules. The FAA expanded that framework through its MOSAIC rule, so old summaries of “light-sport aircraft” can now be materially incomplete. Anyone considering this route should use the current FAA sport-pilot material and the applicable Part 61 provisions rather than a school’s undated comparison chart.
Private pilot certificate
A private pilot certificate is the usual foundation for personal flying and for later commercial training. It permits passengers and limited business-related use, but it does not broadly authorise carrying people or property for compensation or hire.
For a private airplane single-engine rating under Part 61, 14 CFR 61.103 requires the relevant knowledge test, flight training, instructor endorsements, aeronautical experience, and practical test. It sets the general minimum age at 17, or 16 for a glider or balloon rating. For the airplane single-engine route, 14 CFR 61.109(a) specifies at least 40 hours of flight time, including at least 20 hours with an authorised instructor and 10 hours of solo flight training, plus detailed experience inside those totals.
Forty hours is a regulatory minimum for that particular route, not a completion estimate or a promise from a school. Read the entire aircraft-specific paragraph and plan around proficiency, aircraft access, weather, instructor continuity, and testing availability.
Commercial pilot certificate
A commercial pilot certificate permits some operations for compensation or hire. It is not an airline job credential by itself, and it does not override the rules governing a particular operation or employer.
Under 14 CFR 61.123, a commercial applicant must be at least 18, hold at least a private pilot certificate or qualify through the specified military route, complete the applicable knowledge and flight training, receive instructor endorsements, meet aeronautical-experience requirements, and pass the practical test. For a commercial airplane single-engine rating under Part 61, 14 CFR 61.129(a) starts with at least 250 hours as a pilot and then assigns specific experience within that total.
That 250-hour figure is not universal across every aircraft category or every approved training route. It also says nothing by itself about an employer’s current hiring minimums.
Airline transport pilot certificate
The airline transport pilot certificate, usually shortened to ATP, is the highest pilot-certificate level in this sequence. It is required for specified air-carrier roles, but “has an ATP” and “meets this airline’s hiring requirements” remain separate statements.
For an ATP airplane category and class rating, 14 CFR 61.159(a) generally begins at 1,500 hours total pilot time and specifies cross-country, night, instrument, and pilot-in-command or qualifying second-in-command experience within the total. The regulation contains credit provisions and exceptions. The FAA also explains that restricted-privileges ATP pathways can permit qualifying pilots to obtain that certificate with fewer than 1,500 hours and serve as a co-pilot until reaching the required total.
Do not convert “1,500 hours” into a universal airline-entry rule. Certificate eligibility, restricted privileges, aircraft qualification, air-carrier rules, and an employer’s current standards must all be checked independently.
How do aircraft category and class ratings work?
Category is the broad aircraft family. Under 14 CFR 61.5, examples include airplane, rotorcraft, glider, lighter-than-air, powered-lift, powered parachute, and weight-shift-control aircraft.
Class is a division within a category. The airplane classes listed in the regulation are single-engine land, multiengine land, single-engine sea, and multiengine sea. Rotorcraft classes include helicopter and gyroplane. A private pilot certificate with “airplane single-engine land” therefore states both a certificate level and an aircraft category/class qualification.
Adding a different category or class is not an informal checkout. The applicant must meet the rules for the added rating, including the applicable training, endorsements, and practical test or proficiency-check route. The exact process depends on the certificate already held and the rating sought.
Where do instrument and type ratings fit?
An instrument rating is placed on a private or commercial pilot certificate for the applicable aircraft category. It is not a new certificate level. It represents a separate qualification with its own training, knowledge, experience, endorsement, and practical-test requirements. Whether a planned flight requires instrument privileges also depends on the operating conditions and regulations, not merely on whether the aircraft has instruments.
An aircraft type rating is aircraft-specific. Section 61.5 lists type ratings for large aircraft other than lighter-than-air, turbojet-powered airplanes, powered-lift, and other aircraft types specified by the FAA. Holding a commercial or ATP certificate does not remove a required type rating.
These labels can stack. A pilot might hold a commercial pilot certificate with airplane single-engine land, airplane multiengine land, and instrument-airplane ratings, then add a type rating for a particular aircraft. The certificate level and every attached rating still have their own scope.
Is a flight instructor certificate the next pilot level?
No. A flight instructor certificate is separate from a pilot certificate, with its own ratings and operating requirements. It authorises instruction only within the instructor’s certificate and rating privileges. It should not be presented as the automatic stage between commercial and ATP.
Many pilots instruct while building experience, but that is a career choice rather than a universal regulatory sequence. The availability of instructing work, insurer requirements, school standards, and aircraft access vary. A training provider should explain the written requirements for any instructor pathway without promising employment.
What sequence makes sense for a prospective pilot?
Start with the intended aircraft and operation, not with the most impressive certificate name. A person seeking personal daytime flying in an eligible aircraft may compare sport and private routes. Someone planning a professional airplane path may move from student training to private, add an instrument rating, earn a commercial certificate, and later qualify for ATP privileges. That is a common map, not a guarantee or the only lawful sequence.
Before paying a large deposit:
- write down the aircraft category, class, and intended end privilege;
- ask the provider to identify the current regulation and approved syllabus behind every quoted minimum;
- separate regulatory minimum hours from its own completion estimate;
- confirm what aircraft, instructor, examiner, and weather delays do to the timeline;
- obtain written pricing and refund terms; and
- verify each later employer’s requirements on its current careers page.

Medical certification can determine which privileges are available and when. Requirements vary by operation, and Part 61 contains exceptions and alternative pathways. Discuss personal health history, medication, prior applications, and fitness-to-fly questions with an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner before making training or career decisions. Questions to take to a flight school
Ask the school to write the complete qualification it trains toward: certificate, category, class, and any rating. Then ask which rules govern the course, which minimums come from regulation, and which numbers are the school’s own estimate.
A clear answer sounds like “private pilot certificate, airplane single-engine land rating, trained under this named syllabus.” A vague promise to make someone “commercial ready” is not enough. It leaves unanswered which certificate, ratings, examinations, experience, and later operational qualifications the price actually covers.
No school, academy, or recruiter can make a certificate universal. FAA certification establishes defined privileges. Aircraft, operating, medical, recency, employer, immigration, and work-authorisation requirements remain separate checks, and non-U.S. licensing systems use different structures.
